Joanna Cooke – soul and jazz vocalist
Wednesday 5 April 2017 8.30pm Toorak Hotel, Torquay
Joanna Cooke has a voice that just mesmerises.
Joanna’s soulful, expressive and distinctive vocals cross the full range of emotions from warm, cultured and classy to the heartfelt powerhouse. Hardly surprising, when growing up at home included the sounds of old blues masters like Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Later, Joanna soaked up the sounds and skills of leading ladies of soul and jazz such as Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Bessie Smith and Ella Fitzgerald.
Last week, March 24, she played support to jazz/funk band The James Taylor Quartet, who, at the beginning of March played 3 nights at Ronnie Scotts, London, at their only Southwest gig. She is in huge demand for live appearances including festivals in the south-west, plus local BBC TV and radio appearances, and has released a single and two of her own EP records.
Last year, BBC Introducing in Devon commented “Prepare yourselves: this is how it’s done. The soulful and epic Joanna Cooke in session now on BBCIntroducing! She’s so very good. Classy and consistent, we’re loving Joanna Cooke’s new stuff – ‘More Than I Am’ (The lead track from her latest EP) is stunning!”
In addition to her own live and recorded work, Joanna collaborates with music producers in the UK and internationally (Europe, Brazil, South Africa and Australia) using her vocals and material for electronic dance music tracks.
Joanna Cooke will be appearing at SpeakeasyTorquay where she will be on lead vocals, electric piano and percussion with accompanist Nathan Austin on guitars, backing vocals and stomp box. Playing a mix of her own distinctive material and covers.
